About me

Designer, front-end builder, fixer of things.

18+ years of making complicated things easy to use, and a life outside of work that's just as hands-on.

My story

I started designing in 2007, before there was much of a playbook for this work, so I forged my own path. I have a B.S. in Graphic Design from Samford University, and I got my start writing HTML and CSS alongside design, back when that was just expected of a web designer.

I spent eight years at C Spire as a UX Developer, co-owning design and front-end for three flagship site redesigns. At AutoZone I was a design lead on AutoZone.com, which serves nearly 40 million people a month. Most recently I spent five years at Lextech as a Senior Product Designer, designing apps, sites, and design systems for pharma, healthcare, automotive, and hospitality clients.

That front-end foundation still shapes how I work. It keeps my designs grounded in what's buildable, and it means I can have a real conversation with engineering. The best work I have done has always come from teams where everyone truly worked together.

Accessibility isn't something I add at the end. I design for WCAG 2.1 AA as a baseline and advocate for inclusive design from the first wireframe.

How I lead

I lead through the work: setting direction, raising the bar in critique, and helping newer designers grow.

Mentoring

Mentored nearly a dozen junior and associate designers and interns at AutoZone, and led new-hire onboarding.

Design critiques

Helped lead the team's design critiques, giving direction and handling design approvals for Product Discovery.

Hiring

Interviewed design candidates and gave feedback that was factored into hiring decisions.

Facilitation

Ran discovery workshops and stakeholder interviews to build alignment across product, engineering, and leadership.

Kind words

“Over five years I watched her grow from executing designs to leading them — shipping, learning in the open, and staying comfortable in ambiguity rather than waiting to have every answer. I'd hire her again without hesitation.”

Brian MilaDesign Leader · managed Brittany at Lextech

“She didn’t jump straight to a design or technical solution. She wanted to first understand the outcome we were trying to create for the client and, most importantly, for the users.”

Jay ClarkeLead Consultant · managed Brittany at Lextech

“She gives amazing design feedback and helps you see a problem from a different perspective. I am so lucky that I had the privilege to learn from her and grow as a designer and a person.”

Lexi AveryUX Designer · worked on Brittany’s team

“Over about five years, she owned UI/UX on a complex, multi-platform product, holding the design system and brand consistency together across web and mobile while juggling a constant stream of requests without ever dropping one.”

Aric RoushVP, Solution Delivery · managed Brittany at Lextech

“She does an excellent job of collaborating with engineering, working through possibilities and constraints to find solutions that benefit both the user and the product.”

Sarah TullyTech Lead · worked on Brittany’s team

“Brittany is that rare design generalist who can wear multiple hats based on project need: qualitative UX research, web marketing design, consumer and enterprise interfaces—even illustration!”

Side projects

Things I built for myself: a little design, a little code, and a whole lot of fun.

Accessibility · Hardware · Press

Rock Band wheelchair accessibility mod

In 2008 I designed and built a $20 mod that made Rock Band's bass drum pedal playable with drumsticks, so people with lower-body disabilities could play the full kit.

More

I was working at Kinetic Communications at the time, so Engadget and Gizmodo credited the agency; The Birmingham News ran it with my name. The build instructions were published so anyone could make their own. Accessibility has always mattered to me, even before I had a name for it.

Commander Tracker

A Magic: The Gathering life counter. It tracks life totals, commander damage, and poison counters for the whole table on one device. Designed to stay out of the way and just work at the table.

Timekeep

A simple, distraction-free timer and time-tracking tool. Built because I wanted something minimal that just counts time without getting in the way.

Outside of work

Outside of work, my house is loud in the best way. My wife and I have been married for ten years, and somewhere along the way we ended up with five cats and two dogs. I wouldn't trade the chaos for anything.

I also collect Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles stuff, an obsession that started when I was a kid and never really left. My shelves have the proof.

If something in my house or garage breaks, my first instinct is to fix it myself before I call anyone. Cars, appliances, whatever it is, I would rather figure out how it works than replace it. That same instinct is probably why I like 3D printing so much. I get to design something, watch it get built layer by layer, and hold the result. I also draw, mostly for myself, as a way to use a different part of my brain than the one I use all day at work.

None of this shows up on a resume, but it's most of what makes me who I am, and it probably explains a lot about how I approach my work too.

A few facts

🐾

5 cats & 2 dogs

Our house is never quiet, and I like it that way.

💍

10 years married

Married to my favorite person for a decade, and counting.

🐢

TMNT collector

Cowabunga. My turtle collection has been growing since I was a kid.

If it's broken, I fix it

Cars, appliances, anything with moving parts. I would rather diagnose it myself.

🖨️

3D printing

I like designing something on screen and watching it come off the printer.

Illustration

Drawing is how I unplug from screens, even though it's usually on a screen too.
